A Double Take on Disaster Recovery
Why tape is not enough
by Bob Roudebush, Director of Solutions Engineering, Double-Take Software
Some companies have very minimal disaster recovery plans, i.e., “As long as I’ve got a backup on tape I’m okay” or “Don’t worry, we’ve got good backups, we can recover anything.”
Just having a copy of your enterprise data on magnetic tape after a disaster is not enough. In fact, it may not even help after certain disasters.

Restoring data quickly and safely
Many
companies rely on magnetic tape at the core of their disaster recovery plan.
This month’s feature article
explores why this strategy may short-change the enterprise, or even make
recovering critical business operations unsafe.
Last
month, we asked about your Microsoft Exchange Server backup/restore techniques. Your responses
indicate an increased awareness of the need to “snapshot” data — to easily and
quickly recover it. In this issue, we take a look at an employee who, despite
being the “go-to” person for many issues, is difficult to manage. Does this type
of genius need discipline or education? We need your best advice.

Last Issue's Dilemma
How can I create a better backup solution for our Exchange Servers?
The first day back after the holidays, the almost-inevitable happened. One of our Microsoft Exchange Servers crashed. Those servers just can’t handle the constant traffic of so many people reading e-mail accumulated during the holidays.
Naturally, we back up our Exchange Servers so we can restore our users’ messages. But this backup takes up a monstrous amount of physical storage and human resources for my teams to maintain.
Are there better solutions than the typical direct-attached storage architecture? How do other companies back up this mission-critical application?

This Issue's Dilemma
How do I manage a brilliant-but-unorganized employee?
Every company has one — the “genius” who can pull an amazing solution out of you-know-where, when everyone else has been frustrated for weeks.
I have one on my team. He’s the go-to guy for new ideas and solutions, but he’s terribly unorganized and refuses to document anything he’s done. He never follows procedures or stores files where the rest of us can find them. If he’s out for some reason, we can spend half a day trying to recreate his thought process.
In the next few months, we are taking on lots of new business, so I need this person to be in top form, on mission and part of the team. He must get organized and learn to document properly. Do you think I should use discipline or education to help him “over the hump?”
