The Power to Innovate

New data storage solutions allow you to focus on your business, not data

The Champion Advisor speaks with Dave Fivey, Director of Engineering Excellence
for Champion Solutions Group

Does your computer still have a floppy disk drive? If it does, have you ever used it? Probably not. That’s about the same as a new sports car coming with a crank starter attached to the front grill.

Even though data storage has evolved, data storage issues have not. Companies today are still trying to maximize storage capabilities while reducing costs. After high-profile disasters like 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina, they are also aware of the need for a solid disaster recovery plan.

A business partnership for better data storage

Bill Koch

Few companies have the expertise (or budget) to implement cutting-edge data storage solutions. But every company has a need to get the most storage out of the fewest technical and human resources. This month’s feature article explores methods for data storage and provides a new way for any company to gain the expertise it needs in this mission-critical area.

Last month, we asked how you use Microsoft’s best practices to reach your business goals. Your responses prove that conformity with these proven guidelines can create cost savings. This month, we ask how you back up your Exchange Servers. What new tools or processes do you use to keep this vital application running smoothly? We need your best advice.

Last Issue's Dilemma

How can Microsoft best practices help us meet our goals?

I am under a lot of pressure to increase productivity and reduce costs across the board, for all users in our enterprise. Just like every other IT director, right? This doesn’t seem like the time to enforce and use Microsoft best practices (BPs), but I have been reading some postings on message boards lately. People say these BPs can help with our goals.

How have other IT directors used Microsoft’s best practices to meet their internal goals? Are these BPs expensive to implement? If so, how can I prove an ROI to make a case for them?

This Issue's Dilemma

How can I create a better backup solution for our Exchange Servers?

The first day back after the holidays, the almost-inevitable happened. One of our Microsoft Exchange Servers crashed. Those servers just can’t handle the constant traffic of so many people reading e-mail accumulated during the holidays.

Naturally, we back up our Exchange Servers so we can restore our users’ messages. But this back up takes up a monstrous amount of physical storage and human resources for my teams to maintain.

Are there better solutions than the typical direct-attached storage architecture? How do other companies back up this mission-critical application?

— Brian T., CIO
