Compliance and Security: It’s the Law

How to bring IT into Sarbanes-Oxley compliance

by Elizabeth Grace Saunders

Complying with the Sarbanes-Oxley Act is not an option. Each company must follow certain federal guidelines to build a compliance program that addresses each aspect of these corporate regulations. A big part of that compliance program is IT. The business data your company files with federal regulators must be verified as accurate and secure. As Elizabeth Grace Saunders explains in our feature article, data veracity and security are just the beginning of your role in Sarbanes-Oxley.

The importance of compliance

Bill Koch

When you hear “Sarbanes-Oxley Act,” do you shrug it off as something that only concerns number crunchers or legal experts? Think again. Guaranteeing the integrity and security of data is an important component of your company’s SarbOx compliance program. This month’s feature article explains IT’s role and highlights new tools that can help your company stay compliant.

Last month, we asked for your best advice on managing large IT projects. Your responses provide a refreshing mix of standard business practices and 21st century sensibilities. This month, we ask how to develop an e-commerce store when you don’t have the internal knowledge to do it. Should you work with a vendor? We need your best advice.

We welcome your involvement, so please provide your best advice to business dilemmas posed by our readers or present a problem you’re currently facing. Real experience from the field helps everyone succeed.

Is Email Running You Ragged?
Evaluating hosted email as an alternative to an in-house solution

Too often, members of upper management in SMB organizations think their IT department needs to run email operations to control costs and deliver reliable email service to end users. Last Issue's Dilemma

Which strategies work best for managing IT projects?

I’ve just made a big career change. I’ve finally left accounts receivable far behind. With a master’s in business technology in hand, I have landed my first job as an IT team leader.

I have also just been handed my first project — a major software upgrade and implementation. I managed lots of projects back in AR, so I’m wondering what makes managing an IT project different?

Are there specific strategies that work well with IT projects? What special considerations go into an IT project that aren’t part of other non-technical projects? In short, what have other IT professionals done to make sure their projects are completed on time and under budget?

This Issue's Dilemma

How do you build expertise to launch an e-commerce store?

Our company is considering opening an e-store. It’s an exciting idea that sales and marketing love, but I’m not sure how to manage the project from an IT perspective. We don’t currently have that expertise in-house, but I would love to recruit and build a team that could manage it. It would be a big boost for my career.

That would be great for me, but would it be more cost-effective to manage a vendor relationship that could build and maintain the store? Either way, I would still have control over this high-profile project.

What have other people done? Should I create an e-store team internally or work with a vendor?

— Eric P., Senior IT Project Manager
