Less Is More
Strategic server consolidation saves time and
resources
by
Bill Koch, Editor, The
Champion Advisor
In his 18th century writings, Benjamin Franklin
extolled the virtues of building savings in small increments, “A penny saved is
a penny earned.” In the 21st century, financial advisor David Bach extols
the same virtues in The Automatic
Millionaire by decrying the “latte factor.” In other words, if you can
resist the temptation for small — but expensive — little pleasures every day,
you can build the savings necessary to be a millionaire at retirement.
IT managers and directors are a thrifty lot by nature. If
they weren’t before the dot.com bust, they have learned to be since. Most feel
they have already squeezed every dollar out of their infrastructure and every
efficiency out of their staffing.

This Issue's Dilemma
Help! I’m losing my people!
I’ve been a director with the
same company for five years now. In that time, at least 50 percent of my staff has
turned over at least once. The cycle is: hire someone with little experience,
provide training and then lose him or her to a larger company that can offer more money. I,
myself, have had offers, but choose to stay with this company out of a sense of
loyalty for the opportunities and training they’ve provided. I guess I feel a
sense of loyalty.
How do I develop loyalty
within my staff and make staying here more attractive than moving on? We don’t
have the same resources as larger companies, so pay increases or large bonuses
are not an option.
Do your readers have any retention strategies to share or
should I just plan on continually looking for new people?
